CLAY AND SCULPTURE
Workshop

Learn how to model expressive, freestanding clay figures using form, observation, detail and traditional hand-building techniques.

This workshop gives you the full experience of developing a freestanding clay sculpture in a structured, supportive setting. You’ll learn how to create the basic shape of a robed figure using a former, translating a two-dimensional image into a three-dimensional form. You’ll explore key modelling techniques, including shaping, refining and adding detail with appropriate clay tools, building confidence in working with clay while developing an individual finished piece.

After a short introduction to the structure, techniques and safe handling of clay, it’s completely hands-on. Working from provided images of robed figures, or your own reference, you’ll build your sculpture step by step with demonstrations and individual guidance throughout. You’ll experiment with form, proportion, texture and detail while recording stages of the making process for future reference. By the end, you’ll have completed your own clay figure, which will be taken away for kiln firing and returned to the venue ready for collection.
